Free Range Eggs - Omlet

Food with Passion loves the idea of being self-sufficient.

Unfortunately, until such times as we retire to a farm or small holding, that seems nothing but a pipe dream .... but is it? Maybe you can go part-way.

For the last two years, Food with Passion has been egg-sufficient ... and actually more than sufficient and gifting eggs to friends and neighbours when we can't use them fast enough. And the flavour is eggs-cellent (sorry for the pun!!)

Omlet designed the eglu for the town garden, the first time chicken owner, the family and the eco-savvy individual and wanted it to be as easy as looking after a goldfish but more rewarding than owning a dog (you get eggs with chickens!). Keeping a couple of chickens in your garden doesn't require a large investment of money or time, but you do get fantastic tasting eggs and a good feeling inside.

Traditional wooden hen-houses seemed to need a lot more attention than moulded plastic (plastic doesn't rot and is not susceptible to mites in the same way that wooden houses are) and so we came to acquire an Omlet chicken run and four cickens named Parsley, Sage, Rosemary & Thyme ... not that the chickens know their own names.

Omlet Chicken run

Around £2 for layers pellets per week plus kitchen scraps allows us to have around 25 eggs per week ... much more than we can use ourselves. The neighbours have therefore been enjoying eggs as fresh as they have (n)ever tasted ... and much fresher than supermarket eggs.

The Omlet chicken run is fox proof and requires little maintainance to keep the chickens in great health ... a weekly emptying of the poo tray and scraping down of the roosting bars (brilliant for the compost bin) and a monthly full clean (no more than 30 minutes involved) and you will be rewarded with chicken jewels ... as I like to call the eggs.

Maybe you are worried about the noise and disturbing the neighbours? Well, the noisiest chickens are of the male variety .... and they are absolutely useless at producing eggs (he he!!). So... as long as you only have hens, there should be no issue with the neighbours, especially as you are providing them with a regular supply of delicious eggs.

And the great thing is that the neighbours feel obliged to agree to look after the hens when you go on holiday with the promise of an exclusive supply of freshly laid eggs on tap and all to themselves whilst you are on holiday .. so no worries on that score.

One tip ... do register your chickens with the local vet as farm animals. Pets attract the higher veterinary bills and you will see reduced bills should you need to visit the vet.

All we need now is some home-produced bacon to go with the eggs. Is that difficult? Certainly not ..... watch this space!!
