Review Product: Mora Mora Fine Dark Chocolate,
Available from : Sainsburys, Chocolate Trading Company & potentially others
Price Paid: £3.20
Food with Passion was intrigued to see this bar of chocolate available in Sainsburys at a somewhat heady price of around £3.20 when other similar sized bars were around 1/3rd to 1/2 of the price of Mora Mora.
Why such a high price?
Part of this was answered on the label - It is a single estate chocolate, but rather than being processed elsewhere after transporting the raw product, hallf-way across the world, the beans are processed into chocolate and all processing and packaging is carried out in Madagascar under an Equitrade arrangement meaning they charge and pass back a fair price for the product to to the growers.
The chocolate comes with some distinctive pedigree, having won the Chocolate Academy silver medal in 2006. But would it meet with Food with Passion's satisfaction.
Packaging
The packaging is as you would expect with a chocolate bar but on this occasion is wonderfully informative, discussing the particular varieties of cocoa beans used in producing Mora Mora - the information extends to the inside wrapper, somewhat unusually for a bar of choclate.
Allergy Information
I should point out that this is a 73% dark chocolate which is guaranteed to contain NO DAIRY and NO NUTS as it is not produced in a multi-product factory. I do not expect that it will appeal to those who prefer a milk chocolate, especially European or US tastebuds. However, it would appear to be a great source of a chocolate fix for those who have Dairy or Nut Allergies and usually have to walk past chocolate produced on a multi-product line.
So on to the unwrapping. As we pointed out already, there is a wealth of additional information available on the inside of the outer wrapper. Unwrapping the silver revealed a dark silky bar of chocolate too tempting to resist any longer.
The Taste Test
WOW!! Settling a small quare on the tongue, the chocolate slowly melted ..... and I do mean slooooowly, even although the chocolate was already at room temperature and released a rich and pwerful, but delicious flavour far in excess of any other premium chocolate that we have encountered in supermarket aisles.
It is hard to convey the sensations that came from tasting this chocolate (I resist using the word "eat", as to wolf this down would do it and yourself a disservice). You need to savour this and let the flavours wash across your taste buds.
The chocolate does carry a very slight bitterness that we associate with dark chocolate, with subtle fruity notes ... I thought that it reminded me of a deep blackcurrant, but unmistakenly chocolate of the highest quality and with a flavour that lingered on the palate for a long, long time, but is not cloying and sticky like many mass-produced chocolates.
Value for Money
Yes the price tag is high, but you know what? Sometimes you just have to treat yourself and buy the best quality you can even if it does mean pushing the boat out.
One observation with this chocolate is that it is so rich and full of flavour that you will "eat" less in one sitting to leave more for another day.
The author of this review has been known to eat a bar of this size in one sitting when other lesser quality chocolate has been involved - In fact, after less than a quarter of this bar, the author was very satisfied with his chocolate fix.
Before closing this review with a giant thumbs up, I would remind readers that dark premium chocolate does not need to be reserved as a sweeter treat, it can be used in moderation as a fantastic enriching ingredient in many savoury dishes e.g. Chilli. Check out the web for recipe ideas.
