Food with Passion  are delighted to support Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's campaign to improve the welfare of Chickens for meat and egg production in the UK.

For a long time now, Food with Passion has walked past the "economy" birds to select a free range chicken. Food with Passion even bought laying chickens in order that we could be assured of eggs coming from well looked after chickens (watch out for a future feature covering how easy this is, even in relatively small back gardens).

Please take the the opportunity wherever practical to buy a free range chicken. It will cost you more up front, but it will be more flavoursome and with good houskeeping techniques, can reward you with at least three nutritious meals :

(a) Roast Chicken dinner for 4

(b) recover the remaining meat for a risotto or stir fry type meal or sandwiches

(c) make a great home made chicken soup by boiling up the remaining carcass.

Food with Passion was surprised to learn that some people use chicken for the breast meat only and discarded the remainder. If more people move to free-range, then the cost differential will shrink as production moves over to producing free range chickens, making it more affordable for us as consumers and a lot more comfortable for the chickens.

Please do what you can to support animal welfare.
