Blended from a variety of different grapes grown on the estate, Château Haut-Beauséjour contains 52% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot and 3% Côt. After the assemblage, the wine is left to develop for 12 months in barrels made from oaks grown in central France, 30% of which are new. The wine rests for a further 12 months in the bottle before being finally marketed. Appearance: Lovely dense, deep red colour. Nose: Very fruit-forward, lush red fruits on the nose mixing with hints of spice and toastiness. On the palate: Lively on the palate with all the verve and structure that great St. Estèphe are known for. The tannins still have quite a rasp but they are surrounded by enough flesh and fat to sustain an impression of fullness. The wine shows harmoniously as it evolves, tinged with toasty notes of wood and ripe red fruit. All the class and refinement of a true St. Estèphe.

Deep and dark colour. Very complex nose of mature fruits with a touch of wood. Fat attack, beautiful tannic structure and long aftertaste. The beautiful old 18th-century building (formally the stables and cowshed) was renovated in 1993 and is now used to age the wine in barrel. The technical installations were entirely renovated starting in 1990. Since then, fermentation has been carried out in 18 temperature-controlled, stainless-steel vats all equipped with a temperature control system. The final blending is made about two months after the harvest. The whole winemaking process is very traditional. After fermentation, once vats have been selected for blending, the wine is aged in oak barrels for 15 months. During that period, the wine is racked 3-4 times. The aim of this process is to separate the wine from its lees. This is carried out from barrel to barrel, and the clarity is checked by stopping the flow, filling a glass of wine and holding it up to a candle. Once it starts to look cloudy, the racking stops. The wines of Château Les Ormes de Pez are powerful and well-balanced. They are typical of the appellation: rich, round and quite tannic.

The blending was rigorous, the proportions classic. Cabernet France, particularly successful this year, was integrated. The wine is very harmonious with preserved fruits: blackcurrant and morello cherry. Mouthfilling, with a fresh, fleshy, long finish. Balance is flavoured; integrated oak, smooth and dense tannins. 'An undeniable star of the vintage, Pichon-Baron's 2004 boasts an inky/ruby/purple color to the rim as well as a big, sweet nose of melted licorice, chocolate, black currant jam, truffles, and charcoal embers. Soft tannin, full body, and abundant opulence and flesh are atypical for the vintage character, but this wine is loaded. Pure, ripe, and evolved, it should be at its finest between 2009-2022.' - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 93 points!

Chateau Loudenne - Medoc Cru Bourgeois Superieur 2003 75cl Bottle
Wine
The position of Loudenne's vineyard is ideal. Its gravelly ridges slope gently down towards the Gironde Estuary which acts like a mirror. Loudenne also benefits from sea breezes which are propitious for ripening the grapes: concentration through evaporation and slight humidity. The soils are predominantly of clayey limestone and Garonne gravel. Since the Lafragette family bought Loudenne in March 2000, work on the vines has been conducted with the specific aim of enhancing the individual character of Loudenne's terroir. Accordingly, right from the pruning season though to harvesting, every task is carried out with the utmost care, even down to the job of thinning out the harvest and the foliage by hand in September to help the ripening process. Ever anxious to respect the environment, they have instigated carefully calculated protection measures for the vineyard. In consequence, for the harvest to arrive in the cellars in good condition (an indispensable factor in making good quality wine), a series of preventative sprayings is essential. But thanks to their grasp of the development of diseases and weather conditions, they are able to choose when to carry out the treatment. So it is not systematic and accordingly, the number of times they spray is reduced. In the same way, when it comes to choosing the products, they opt more for substances which most respect the environment. Consequently the grapes destined to produce Loudenne's wines are perfectly ripe and in ideal condition. Harvesting took place from September 30 to October 15 for a period of 11 days, carried out mechanically and by hand with the use of panniers and a sorting table. In order not to impair the quality of the grapes (the result of the vine-workers' hard labour and Nature's bounty), on arrival at the cellars, the harvest was manipulated with great care - no violent tipping, and subsequently transferred by conveyor belt. Vinification in stainless steel or lined concrete vats. Vatting : 3 weeks. Punching down of the cap and pumping over. Malolactic fermentation in French oak vats and barrels. Aging for 16 months in the cask. 30% of the casks renewed every year. Choosing different coopers adapted to their wines enables them to obtain complex, telling aromas. First started in 2000, malolactic fermentation in the cask is carried out in all the new casks. The aromas imparted by the vats are better accepted by the wine. This age-old technique makes the tannins silky and the wines rounder. A magnificent spring favoured an early start to the vegetation cycle. The rainy, coldish summer might well have slowed the ripening process down but fortunately, the months of September and October were hot and windy, enabling them to achieve optimum maturity and to harvest in ideal weather conditions. The hailstorm on September 20 did not damage the vineyard.
