Are you confused by labelling? Here are some example questions:
Q1. Does a pretty picture of a farm meadow mean that an animal ever got to meander through it at all?
A1. No. - the images whilst misleading, actually infer nothing about an animal being allowed to roam in pastures or the open air. It is important to read and interpret the words.....though these can also be written in a flattering or sometimes misleading way too
Q2. Does the Red Tractor mean a high standard of animal welfare?
A2. Food with Passion's opinion is that this is one of the most misleading pieces of marketing ever seen. The red tractor signifies that a minimum standard of welfare has been met; however, we have not yet seen definite advice as to what the minimum standards are for various animals, even at the officia site http://www.redtractor.org.uk. Until we see published standards, we remain sceptical.
Q3. Does Chicken Flavour and Chicken Flavoured mean the same thing?
A3. Absolutely not!! the ''ed" is an important distinction.... one means that there is actual chicken, the other just means that a chicken flavour has been manufactured without the use of chicken......and this could be chemically produced.
Right now, Food with Passion is probably as mystified as you by all sorts of misleading statements on food labels.
Within this section of Food with Passion, we will provide resarched answers to clear up much of this. especially where the labelling refers to the levels of animal welfare.
