Emma Bridgewater is the oldest daughter in a large family. She grew up in North Oxford and her mother's bohemian style is the inspiration for her desirable work. Emma started designing sponge-decorated pottery after trying to find her the perfect cup and saucer for a birthday present and ultimately designed her own.
Emma graduated from London University with a degree in English Literature. Her first and only previous ojb was working for a knitwear designer; and it gave her the taste for doing something for herself. She designed a small collection of patterns and shapes and went on to Stoke-on-Trent, in the "potteries" in search of a manufacturer,
Fortunately Emma Bridgewater found a talented model-maker with a small workshop making good quality earthenware goods in Chemical Lane, Longbridge Hayes. He started making Emma’ Bridgewaters pottery and before long almost his entire factory was turned over to the producing the Emma Bridgewater spongeware.
