Caviar is the processed, salted roe of fish, most famously and expensively obtained from the sturgeon (black caviar) and from salmon (red caviar).
Caviar is commercially marketed worldwide as an expensive delicacy and is eaten as a garnish or a spread; for example with hors d'œuvres.
There are less expensive derivatives available, and it is fair to say that if your palate is unaccustomed to caviar, you (and your guests) will be unlikely to be able to appreciate the difference.
It is customary for caviar to be tasted from a spoon carved from a non-metallic material such as glass, bone, natural horn or mother-of-pearl as there is some suggestion that metal spoons may impart a metallic flavour to the caviaer; however this is far from certain.
